LG Display’s latest product, following its stretchy LCD panels, is a super-thin speaker designed to be installed in car interiors while remaining “invisible.”

The Thin Actuator Sound Solution was created in collaboration with a “global audio company” (LG did not specify which one) as a replacement for traditional car speakers.

The system foregoes the usual voice coils, cones, and magnets found in most speakers in favor of film-like exciter technology.

According to the company, this can vibrate off display panels and various materials inside the car body to provide a “rich, 3D immersive sound experience.”

Because of their small size (5.9 x 3.5 inches and a tenth of an inch thick) and light weight (1.4 ounces), the panels can be hidden inside car interior parts such as the dashboard,

headliner, pillar, and headrests. According to LG, this frees up space normally occupied by speakers “without compromising sound quality.”

The idea isn’t entirely novel; similar vibrating panels have been used in OLED TVs from Sony and LG.

However, if LG Display’s claims about sound quality are correct, car interiors are a new application with significant benefits.

We might find out for ourselves soon, as LG is set to demonstrate the technology at CES 2023 (yes, it’s just around the corner). LG stated that the speakers will be available for purchase in the first half of 2023.
