After implementing an unprecedented policy change earlier in the day, Elon Musk took to Twitter on Sunday to ask his followers whether he should step down as the company’s chief executive officer.
“Should I resign as Twitter CEO?” he asked, adding that he would “abide by the results of this poll.” As of the time of writing this article, the “Yes” option had received over 2 million votes.

The poll will close around 6 a.m. ET. Musk previously stated that when Twitter considers future policy changes, there will be a public vote. “Please accept my apologies. Won’t happen again, “He stated.

The vote comes after Twitter announced a major rule change earlier in the day that effectively prohibits users from linking to competing platforms such as Facebook, Instagram, Mastodon, and Donald Trump’s Truth Social.
Twitter’s new “Promotion of alternative social platforms” policy states that posts containing links to those websites will be deleted. It also warned users against attempting to bypass the ban and said repeat offenders could be subject to permanent suspensions.
After expressing frustration with the policy and telling his followers to find him on Mastodon, the company briefly suspended the account of Paul Graham, the founder of Y Combinator and an early supporter of Musk’s takeover of Twitter.
It’s worth noting that Musk has already said he plans to hand over the day-to-day operations of Twitter to someone else. In fact, he made that commitment under oath. “I frankly don’t want to be the CEO of any company,” he told a court last month.

A public vote won’t change that, but it might bruise his ego. Furthermore, Musk’s tweet leaves out the fact that he is under intense pressure from Tesla investors to return his focus to the automaker.
Tesla’s stock price has plummeted since Musk’s takeover of Twitter at the end of October. It fell by 22% in December alone. All of this has caused some of Musk’s most ardent supporters to turn against him.
