According to 9to5Google, Android 12 is now available for the 4K model of the Chromecast with Google TV. The 2020 streaming dongle update comes after the release of Google’s lower-cost HD model last month, which came pre-installed with Android 12.

To download the update for the 4K dongle, go to the profile icon in the upper right corner of the interface, then Settings, System, About, and System Update.

The update adds no major new features to the two-year-old streaming dongle, but it does include a couple of new settings that should improve playback in certain circumstances.

The most notable is a new frame rate matching feature, which should reduce judder by allowing the Chromecast to match the frame rate of the content being played. New controls for HDR formats and surround sound are also included.

9to5 Google also mentions that the update allows users to disable app access to the camera and microphone.

If you like to use your Chromecast with Google TV for Duo calls, for example, by plugging in a webcam via a USB-C hub, the new update gives you more control over when apps can see and hear you.

The release notes also mention “increased security and privacy” as well as “bug fixes and performance improvements.”

Given the streaming dongle’s relative lack of updates since its release, any update is welcome news. Just don’t expect a total makeover.
