To connect an older iPad to cell networks, you may need to do some extra legwork. According to MacRumors, the company stopped activating the Apple SIM in certain iPads on October 1st.

If you are affected, you will need to contact your carrier (and most likely obtain a SIM card) or use an eSIM in newer tablets. If you already have cell service, this will not affect you.

The card was embedded in 9.7-inch, 10.5-inch, and second-generation 12.9-inch iPad Pros. All iPads released after the fall of 2018 support eSIMs.

This decision is part of a larger pattern. In recent years, Apple has shifted toward eSIMs, even eliminating the SIM tray in US versions of the iPhone 14 and 14 Pro.

The technology eliminates the need for a physical slot and is more widely supported than Apple SIM. Still, if you wanted to use cellular data on an older iPad but didn’t set up the SIM card until later, this could be a hassle.
