Maserati has finally unveiled its all-electric GranTurismo, and the most intriguing aspect may be what you don’t notice.
With a tri-motor 760HP system, the GranTurismo Folgore coupe has plenty of power, but it’s also as low-slung as the gas versions (the Modena and Trofeo) at 53.3 inches.
Maserati claims that this is the lowest-sitting EV on the market, with improved agility to match. You wouldn’t know it was an EV if it weren’t for the aerodynamic wheels and lack of exhaust pipes — even Porsche can’t do that.
The Italian manufacturer has not specified the range, but the electrified GranTurismo includes a 92.5kWh battery with an 800V architecture that allows for up to 270kW charging. Maserati claims 62 miles of range in five minutes.
The two-door also outperforms its combustion engine counterparts, with a claimed 0-62MPH time of 2.7 seconds (versus 3.5 for the Trofeo and 3.9 for the Modena) and a top speed of 198.9MPH.
The GranTurismo’s cabin technology, like that of the Grecale Folgore SUV, represents a significant upgrade over previous models. A 12.2-inch digital dash, a 12.3-inch central infotainment screen, and an 8.8-inch “comfort display” are standard.
A heads-up display keeps your eyes on the road, and a digital rear-view mirror can help with tricky parking maneuvers by using the back camera. Alexa, Android Auto, and Apple CarPlay are all supported.
Even though this is a sports car, driver aids such as active lane assist, a 3D road view (including nearby vehicles), and a 360-degree view will help you navigate tight spots.
Maserati did not specify pricing or availability, but it is safe to assume the GranTurismo Folgore will be expensive. Not that the company is concerned.
In some ways, this is a jab at local sports car rivals such as Ferrari and Lamborghini. While both brands have offered hybrids such as the SF90 Stradale and Sian, they have been hesitant to embrace full-fledged EVs.
If you want an Italian exotic without massive emissions and equally massive fuel bills, Maserati is effectively the only option.
