Body Comp is the latest addition to Withings’ line of class-leading smart scales. The device is marketed as a “complete body assessment scale” that can examine aspects of our bodies that are normally reserved for clinical settings.
Weight, muscle mass, fat mass, water percentage, bone mass, BMI, and visceral fat counts are all included. You’ll also get information on your standing heart rate, vascular health (based on Pulse Wave Velocity), and nerve health.
It’s also the first Withings product to be sold that is compatible with Health+, the company’s other new announcement.
Health+ is Withings’ new subscription platform, as recurring revenue is now the only way for most hardware companies to make money. It promises to “unlock additional features in the Health Mate app,” providing tips on how to achieve a healthier body.
These include six-week habit-forming modules that are contextualized with data from your Withings devices. They will also be given meal plans and workout suggestions to help them reach their goals faster. (Health+ costs $79.95 after the first year of use and is only compatible with this and future Withings products.)
This is not the same as Body Scan, the scale announced by Withings in January that came with its own electrode handle. This scale, like other high-end body composition scales, requires you to hold the handle at waist height in order to read your vital statistics accurately.
It will tell you the fat and water ratios in your arms, legs, and torso, as well as monitor your nerve activity, armed with the data. Although that product has not yet been released, it is clear that Body Comp will offer the majority of the same features with slightly less fine grain data.
There are now a significant number of devices with the names Withings and Body, and you’d be forgiven for having difficulty keeping them all straight in your head.
The Body Cardio is the current flagship model, and it includes all of the current bells and whistles, such as weight, BMI, body composition, heart rate, and vascular age. Below that, the Body+ provides weight, BMI, and body composition, whereas the vanilla Body only provides weight and BMI.
