If you want AI to create images from text, you don’t need DALL-E; all you need is a popular social media app. According to The Verge, TikTok has added a rudimentary “AI greenscreen” effect to its Android and iOS apps, which turns your text descriptions into artwork.
It’s much simpler than OpenAI’s DALL-E 2, producing abstract blobs rather than photorealistic depictions, but it might suffice if you’re looking for a unique background for your latest video.
However, as The Verge explains, there may be compelling reasons to limit the AI generator’s capabilities. Even if the computational power isn’t an issue, the potential output could be.
Attempts to generate sexual or violent images are currently failing. They could be related to your keywords, but they aren’t explicit. This could help creators avoid bans and keep TikTok out of further legal trouble.
At the very least, the effect makes AI image generation more accessible. DALL-E and other experimental tools are still available only to a select few.
Meanwhile, TikTok has over 1 billion monthly users; while few of them are likely to use AI-generated art, the addition brings the technology to a wider audience.
