According to Variety and a tweet from Interplay Entertainment, the cult classic ’90s game Earthworm Jim will return to television as a new series.

Interplay owns the rights to Earthworm Jim games and recently announced that the franchise would be resurrected as an Intellivision Amico exclusive.

The project will be led by Interplay’s newly formed TV and film studio division, in collaboration with Passion Pictures, an animation studio.

“This story universe has so much potential: a galaxy full of animals battling for power,” project lead Michel K. Parandi told Variety. “Jim is an earthworm in a universe where the Earth is merely a myth. His search for meaning is surreal and comical, but also relatable.”

The first Earthworm Jim game was released in 1994 for the Sega Genesis and Super Nintendo, with the most recent in 1999. There is no word on when the new game will be released.

There was also a Warner Bros. cartoon series based on the game that aired for two seasons in 1995, with Dan Castellaneta, best known as the voice of Homer Simpson, playing the lead character.

In a subsequent tweet, Interplay stated that the game’s original creator, presumably Doug TenNapel, “is not involved at all.”

TenNapel was originally hired as a creative consultant for the game, but his involvement was called into question after he made a number of racist and homophobic comments on a podcast.
